Racing, Sailing & Cruising

The Southwestern Yacht Club Sail Fleet shares a love for the sea by encouraging sailing skills, yacht racing, and friendships among our members. From Club-level races to major national and international competitions, our Racing Fleet welcomes sailors of all abilities. We proudly support members in top events, where they’ve earned many titles, continuing our proud tradition. Junior sailors are an important part of the team, competing in famous races like the Lipton Cup and learning from mentors at the Club. Our Race Management Committee provides excellent officiating for local and international events, while workshops help improve racing skills and safety for everyone. For those who enjoy exploring, the SWYC Cruisers visit exciting places like Catalina and other yacht clubs, organizing potlucks and fun events throughout the year. Whether you love racing or cruising, there’s something here for you—join us and be part of the journey!

Mission
The Southwestern Racing Fleet (SWRF) is part of Sail Fleet and was organized to promote sailboat racing at the family level for members only. Contact us (see below) to learn how you can race your own boat or crew on another boat in the next race. The objective is to provide opportunities for the development of sailing skills and for social activities among friends and family members. The racing season is from January to November, with December set aside for social events and award ceremonies. Some of the races include overnight raft-ups at Mission Bay or Glorietta Bay. The intent is to promote a love for the sport of sailing in general, and racing in particular, among friends and family members. We look forward to seeing you on the water or at some of the events this year.

Southwestern Yacht Club Sail Fleet’s mission is to inspire a love of the sea and its lore and to encourage proficiency in seamanship and yacht racing among all members of Southwestern Yacht Club.  We host yacht races for sailors of all skill levels – Club racing through our Racing Fleet; and inter-club, Southern California, National and International competitions.  We sponsor our Club member sailors in elite level races, where they have flown our burgee and brought back many National, International, and Olympic titles, honoring and enhancing our tradition.  We actively engage our Junior sailors, involving them in events, such as the prestigious Lipton Cup, and providing mentorship from within our ranks.  Our top-notch Race Management Committee officiates dozens of events, form local to international.  We host educational seminars aimed at improving racing skills and safety, open to all Club members and members of our competitor clubs. Discover more below.

Sail Fleet

Sail Fleet membership is open to any SWYC member and organizes all racing activities, including local races and interclub events. The Racing Fleet allows any member to race, whether their boat is equipped for racing or not, with a handicap system to ensure fair competition. The Race Management team handles on-water race activities, and the Competition Committee manages inter-club competitions, including national and international events.

In addition to racing, Sail Fleet hosts social events, dinners, and speakers, fostering camaraderie among members. Whether you're interested in racing, cruising, or volunteering, joining Sail Fleet is a great way to make new friends and get involved.

Application Form
The Sail Fleet Board meets the 1st Tuesday of each month at 6:00pm.

For Members
  • First there is the Racing Fleet, where friends and family can enjoy racing at its best!  All you need to do is join and start racing. The Racing Fleet takes care of assigning you a handicap based on your skill level.
  • If you want even more excitement, the PHRF racing scene is for you. Here you will compete against yachts from all over the area in events as varied as 60+ mile ocean races to fierce windward leeward buoy racing.
  • And, if that is not enough, then there is our Competition Committee. You can get hooked up with some national events to compete against the best.
For Non-Members
  • Sign up to compete in one of many sailboat races.  We are nationally recognized for our excellent race management skills, so you are sure to enjoy a well-run competitive race.
  • Volunteer as crew. Racers are always looking for crew and the better you are, the more sought after you’ll be.  Crewing is the best way to sharpen your sailing skills.
  • Get involved with Race Management. Race Management organizes and executes the races from the start to finish, from protests to the scoring, and always needs volunteers to ensure races run smoothly.
Crew Sign-Up

How the Crew List Works
The crew list is a private Google Group and is currently open to club members only. The aim of the group is to connect crew with skippers for upcoming races. Once Joined, we encourage you to introduce yourself, interests in sailing, and what you are seeking.

There are two ways to access the group. First is that you can send an email directly to the list at [email protected]. Sending an email to this address will send to everyone on the list and anyone can reply in-thread. Alternatively, you can visit https://groups.google.com/ and you should be able to see it as "SWYC Crew" in your list, once you've been approved. Note, if you didn't sign up with a Google email address, you won't be able to see this. We recommend using gmail if you want to access the group through the group page.

The SWYC Race Management Committee manages a variety of sailboat racing events, ensuring fair, well-organized competitions through detailed planning and teamwork. Volunteers of all ages, genders, and experience levels are welcome—sailors or not. Roles require focus, adaptability, and a team spirit, with rewards like excitement, new friends, and time on the water. To join, sign up for a race, and experienced members will guide you. Contact [email protected] to get started!

Race Management

The award winning SWYC Race Management Committee manages all interclub races for our Club.

The Race Committee lines up committee boats, volunteers for timing, recording and mark setting, and writes sailing instructions for races according to the U.S. Sailing Association rules.  The excellent performance of our race volunteers led to SWYC being selected to host the 1992 and 1995 Louis Vuitton Challenger Series, leading to the America's Cup races in those years, in addition to hosting the 2007 Olympic Sailing Trails.  In 2008, SWYC received the U.S. Sailing St. Petersburg Trophy for excellence in Race Management.

The SWYC Race Committee is responsible for managing a wide variety of sailboat racing events sponsored by Southwestern Yacht Club.  We are always looking for volunteers who enjoy being out on the water to assist with race management.

Thanks to our Race Committee volunteers, we successfully host more than 15 plus sailing events each year. To volunteer now, fill out the volunteer form!  You can volunteer at any time during the year.  We provide sign-up sheets for all events, and you can volunteer for as many events as you desire.

We welcome everyone, experienced or not.  To get started, sign up to attend a race and one of our experienced Race Committee members will be happy to teach you.

You can be a member or non-member, any age or gender, and don't have to be a sailor!  There are many positions on the Race Committee that can be filled by a wide variety of people.  Below are the descriptions of the different responsibilities.  It's a lot of fun, a great excuse to spend the day on the water, and there are no special qualifications for many of these positions.
Skipper:
Navigates the Race Committee boat to the race site. Positions the boat to be anchored for the start. Maintains the boat position throughout the race and navigates the boat back to the club. Qualifications: Owns or has access to a large power boat. Skilled in navigation and maneuvering.

PRO:
Principal Race Officer (PRO) makes all command decisions regarding conduct of the race. Qualifications: Requires thorough knowledge of the racing rules, successful completion of the Race Management Course and considerable experience.

Timer:
The Timer announces race sequence:  race starts, restarts, and finishes. This is a critical position. Qualifications: Requires knowledge of the Racing Rules starting procedure and broad Race Committee volunteer experience.

Recorder:
Uses pre-printed entry lists to check-in boats, records starting errors, and finish times.  Qualifications: None.

Signal Flags:
Raises and lowers signal flags primarily for the starting sequence as instructed by the Timer. Qualifications: None.

Gunner:
Fires single barrel shot gun using blanks during starting sequence and at finish on command of Timer. Qualifications:  Minimal training required.

Spotter:
Notes wind direction and spots finishing boats.   Qualifications: None.

Crew:
Inflates marks, drops anchors holding the marks, retrieves marks and anchors, displays signal flags as instructed. Qualifications: None.  Requires average strength and agility.

Scorer:
Receives finishing times from Race Committee. Uses computer program to score races based on boats' handicap rating.  Qualifications: Requires knowledge of scoring procedure and computer program. Considerable experience required.

The SWYC Cruisers are a fun and adventurous group open to all Club Members—boat ownership is not required! Cruisers enjoy 6–8 planned outings each year, exploring destinations near and far. Activities include rafting boats together on the water, visiting coastal yacht clubs, and rafting up around La Playa and Glorietta Bay. To get involved, check The Halyard or The Mooring Line for upcoming events. Join us for camaraderie and unforgettable adventures!

Cruisers

Who can join Cruisers?
Any Member of SWYC can be a Cruiser. You do not have to own a boat to join.

What do Cruisers do?
We cruise to locations near and far. About 6-8 cruises are planned each year. Many
Cruisers raft up the boats together on the water. Some are meeting at Yacht Clubs up and down the coast for activities. Tying up at moorings around Catalina is a favorite.

How do I become involved?
Check the Halyard and The Mooring Line for upcoming Cruiser events. Sign up at the Front Desk or online for Cruiser events or let the person in charge know you are interested (this will be noted on any Cruiser announcements or advertisements posted in the Clubhouse and in the Halyard).
See attached documents for guidelines on Cruisers Raft-Ups & the Raft-Master volunteer guide:
